Mahjong Workshop Hong Kong Style
Have you always wanted to play mahjong? Then this is your chance to learn!
Mahjong is a Chinese heritage tile game. It’s about skills, strategy, and luck. Several countries have their own variation of the game. We’ll teach you Hong Kong-style mahjong, one of the most played variations in the Chinese community.
We will not just share the rules, but also history, traditions, family stories, and warnings for cheaters! Our goal is to introduce people to mahjong in a genuine, authentic, and respectful way. Plus, you will be playing behind a legit mahjong table for the full experience.
This pop-up edition at Sea Palace restaurant will be our biggest one yet. The location alone already make this an epic event! We have four different types of tickets this time. Either way, it promises to be a fun afternoon together!
Sea Palace (Café)
Just a 5-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you can’t miss one of the city’s most iconic landmarks: Sea Palace.
Known as Europe’s first floating restaurant, Sea Palace was historically also one of the largest Chinese restaurants in the world.
They are serving their specialties: authentic Cantonese cuisine, dim sum, Peking duck, and Sichuan dishes.
And recently, they opened their café too, where you can enjoy creative Chinese bakery buns and interesting iced teas, like their pandan cloud milk tea.
So I probably don’t have to tell you how special and what an honor it is to host our pop-up mahjong event right here, on the third floor of Sea Palace.
Every participant gets to enjoy a bolo boa or cha sieuw boa included with the tickets. And of course, if you feel like more you can order anything from their café’s menu too!
1. BEGINNER’S CLASS
What: Mahjong Hong Kong Style for beginners. You will be given homework to recognize the Chinese tiles 1-9. The workshop starts with the whole group where the basics will be explained. In the second half of the workshop, you play in teams behind a table. In the break we will enjoy a bolo boa or a char siew boa from Sea Palace Café together.

2. PRACTICE ROUND BEGINNERS
Everyone who knows the mahjong basics knows you need to keep playing to get into the flow and develop your own style. We got you!
What: We will enjoy a bolo boa or a char siew boa from Sea Palace Café, while having fun playing Hong Kong-style mahjong for about two hours, practising your game.
This ticket is designed for beginners who want to practise building the walls, get familiar with the flow of the game, and master “sheung” and “pong” as you work towards creating a mahjong.
Don’t worry about scoring just yet! You can always ask our sifus for tips and guidance to help you improve your skills.
We keep it dynamic by switching tables after every game; only the winner stays. This way you play with different players, learn by observing others and getting the best tips to improve your skills.

3. PRACTICE ROUND LEVEL UP
You followed the Level Up workshop, or you already know Hong Kong scoring but want to practice the game with sifu’s guidance? We got you!
What: We will enjoy a bolo boa or a char siew boa from Sea Palace Café while having fun playing Hong Kong-style mahjong for about two hours, practising your game.
This ticket is designed for Level up players who want to practise the flow of the game, including playing with scoring and chips.
We keep it dynamic by switching tables after every game; only the winner stays. This way you play with different players, learn by observing others and getting the best tips to improve your skills.

4. EAT & PLAY
Already know how to play Hong Kong-style mahjong and just looking for a seat to play a few rounds while enjoying a boa?
This one is for you! Come play, practice and meet new people for a “gezellige” afternoon.
What: We have two tables for this session and you’ll have a fixed seat to settle in.
You’ll play with chips, so by 17.30 we’ll know who takes the win of the day.

Bolo boa (pineapple bun) or a char siew boa (sweet pork bun) will be served during the workshop.
Unfortunately, we don’t have a vegan option this time.
During the workshop, there are some small snacks on the table, which is included in your ticket.
Drinks are not included but can be purchased on-site.

2. Cancellations & Refunds
•Cancellations by Participants:
•Cancellations up to 7 days before the event will receive a full refund.
•Cancellations made within 7 days of the event are non-refundable.
•Cancellations by Organizer:
If we must cancel the Workshop due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., illness, low attendance, force majeure), participants will receive a full refund or be offered an alternative date.
